What this guide helps you decide
EN 39 historically covered steel scaffold tubes, but BS EN 39:2001 was withdrawn in May 2026. Here is what project teams should check now.
Article contents⌄
EN 39 has long been associated with loose steel tubes used in tube-and-coupler scaffolding. It appears frequently in scaffold catalogs and older project specifications. However, its status changed in 2026 and that matters for procurement.
01Current status
As of September 2026, BSI lists BS EN 39:2001 — Loose steel tubes for tube and coupler scaffolds. Technical delivery conditions as withdrawn, with a withdrawal date of 21 May 2026.
02Why older catalogs still mention EN 39
Scaffolding equipment has a long service life and many specifications are reused across projects. As a result, an old standard number can remain in product descriptions long after its formal status changes. The presence of “EN 39” in a catalog should therefore trigger a specification check rather than automatic acceptance or rejection.
03What EN 39 historically addressed
The standard covered technical delivery conditions for loose steel tubes used with tube-and-coupler scaffolds, including dimensional and material-related requirements. It was commonly associated with 48.3 mm scaffold tube systems.
04What should project teams do now?
- Check the project specification and approved material submittal.
- Confirm whether the client still contractually references EN 39 or another tube specification.
- Verify tube dimensions, material grade, wall thickness, finish and test documentation actually required.
- Check compatibility with couplers and other components in the selected system.
- Do not describe EN 39 as a current standard without qualification.
05Relationship with tube-and-coupler scaffolding
The withdrawal of one tube standard does not make tube-and-coupler scaffolding obsolete. The system remains widely used because of its flexibility. What changes is the need to define the tube specification correctly in current project documents.
06Thien Phu approach
For international projects, Thien Phu recommends confirming the exact required tube specification from the BOQ, client specification or approved submittal before quotation. See our tube & coupler scaffolding section for representative components.
